SAN JOSE, Calif. — Apex Electronics, the nation’s largest consumer technology retailer, confirmed Friday that its highly publicized "Singularity" rewards tier currently has zero members, six months after its nationwide rollout.
Company executives defended the loyalty program’s structure, stating that the lack of active members is a testament to the tier’s uncompromising standards of brand engagement rather than an engineering or administrative oversight.
"Singularity was designed to reward our most integrated partners," said Marcus Vance, Vice President of Customer Retention at Apex. "It represents a dynamic, real-time relationship between consumer behavior and corporate logistics. It was never meant to be easy; it was meant to be mathematically perfect."
According to the 114-page terms of service agreement, entering the Singularity tier requires a customer to maintain a "rolling spend-to-income index" that fluctuates based on regional supply chain pressures. To qualify, members must execute at least four transactions per month totaling an exact prime number of dollars and cents, with all purchases occurring during off-peak electrical grid hours in their local municipality.
Furthermore, the program utilizes telemetry data from the Apex smartphone app. To prevent point decay, members must ensure their phone’s ambient light sensor registers at least 300 lumens for two hours daily, verifying they are actively using Apex-purchased screens in well-lit environments.
Clara Hensley, a system administrator from Beaverton, Oregon, spent the last four months attempting to navigate the criteria. After purchasing three high-end television sets and an industrial-grade router, she believed she had secured the elusive status.
"I had my spreadsheet fully synchronized with the Apex API," Hensley said. "But my status was revoked forty-eight hours later. Apparently, I bought a package of triple-A batteries on a Tuesday when the regional consumer price index rose by 0.2 percent, which triggered the 'portfolio rebalancing' clause and reset my progress to the Bronze tier."
Despite consumer frustration, retail analysts have praised the program’s financial design. By establishing an elite tier with zero participants, Apex has successfully avoided the balance-sheet liabilities associated with unredeemed rewards points, which typically cost major retailers millions of dollars annually.
"It is an incredibly elegant balance-sheet maneuver," said Devin Patel, a retail equity analyst at Synergy Research Group. "They have created high-margin marketing buzz with absolutely zero redemption overhead. It is the first loyalty program in history to achieve perfect friction."
Apex plans to expand the Singularity program next month by introducing "Singularity Black," which will incorporate biometric sleep data and local barometric pressure into the qualification algorithm.
For those who do eventually qualify for Singularity status, the benefits remain highly anticipated. According to the company website, members will receive a complimentary branded microfiber screen-cleaning cloth annually, priority access to refurbished auxiliary cables, and a quarterly automated voicemail from a simulated executive assistant thanking them for their business.
