HOUSTON — The Federal Aerospace and Exploration Commission (FAEC) announced Friday that it has permanently canceled the $3.4 billion Aetheris IV mission to Jupiter’s moon, Europa, following an unresolvable $147 deficit in the launch center’s quarterly office-supply allocation.
The decision, which brings a decade of interplanetary research to an abrupt halt, came after the mission's trajectory-mapping team ran out of low-odor, chisel-tip dry-erase markers and standard 3x3-inch yellow adhesive notes. Under federal procurement guidelines established by the 2024 Administrative Efficiencies Act, the launch center had already exhausted its quarterly $250 "Visual Communication and Notational Mediums" budget, triggering an automatic lock on the agency’s internal purchasing portal.
"We exhausted every possible mathematical model to route the spacecraft to Europa without the use of a physical whiteboard," said Dr. Marcus Vance, the mission director for Aetheris IV. "Unfortunately, the real-time telemetry calculations for the Jovian orbital insertion require a constant, multi-colored visual reference board for the navigation team. By Tuesday morning, our last blue marker was completely dry, and the green one was faint enough to introduce a margin of error that could have sent the probe directly into the sun."
According to internal memos, members of the navigation team attempted to resolve the shortage by purchasing a four-pack of markers at a nearby drugstore using their own money. However, the FAEC’s Office of Legal Compliance immediately halted the transaction, noting that the introduction of privately funded office supplies into a federal facility violated the Anti-Deficiency Act and constituted an "unauthorized public-private partnership."
"While we understand the scientific community's disappointment, fiscal discipline must remain our highest priority," said Brenda L. Croft, Deputy Associate Administrator of Procurement and Asset Flow. "If we allow scientists to bypass the System-Wide Administrative Purchasing portal just because they are in a hurry, we undermine the entire competitive bidding process. A marker today is a desk chair tomorrow, and that is how you get administrative anarchy."
Croft added that the agency's automated system could not process an emergency waiver because the software required to submit a waiver request requires a printed, physical signature on Form 802-A, which must be affixed with a specific type of blue adhesive that was also out of stock.
The Aetheris IV spacecraft, which has been fully assembled and fueled at Cape Canaveral since June, will now be systematically dismantled. The agency plans to auction off the probe's titanium housing and gold-plated radiation shields to private aerospace firms in an effort to recoup the $280 processing fee required to formally close the mission's administrative file.
"It’s a setback, certainly," Dr. Vance said, looking over the darkened Houston control room. "But we have to respect the process. On the bright side, the salvage auction should give us enough administrative credits to order a box of medium-point ballpoint pens for the 2029 Mars orbiter planning committee, provided they don't change the form size."
