MUNICH — A comprehensive six-year study published Monday by the Munich Institute for Temporal Dynamics has concluded that the primary driver of arriving late to an appointment is the act of leaving one’s point of origin after the scheduled start time of that appointment.
The paper, published in the *European Journal of Applied Chronemics*, tracked the daily movements of 12,400 participants across eight European metropolitan areas. Utilizing high-resolution GPS transponders, synchronized atomic clocks, and mandatory daily diaries, researchers isolated variables ranging from public transit delays to inclement weather, only to find that the absolute predictor of tardiness was a metric they termed "pre-departure temporal deficit."
"For decades, urban sociologists have blamed chronic lateness on complex structural factors, such as metropolitan infrastructure bottlenecks or psychological resistance to authority," said Dr. Helena Brandt, the lead researcher of the study. "However, our empirical data reveals a much simpler, linear physical constraint: if an individual’s meeting in the city center is scheduled for 9:00 a.m., and that individual does not cross their own front threshold until 9:04 a.m., the mathematical probability of on-time arrival drops to absolute zero."
The study’s findings, which occupied a team of forty-two full-time academics and utilized over €14 million in European Union research grants, established what is now being called the Brandt-Larsson Threshold. According to the formula, any distance greater than zero meters requires a non-zero amount of time to traverse. Consequently, commencing a journey at or after the target arrival time ensures a tardy outcome, regardless of the mode of transit.
Dr. Aris Thorne, a sociologist at the University of Gothenburg who peer-reviewed the paper, called the research a watershed moment for modern temporal science.
"Prior to Dr. Brandt’s work, we only had anecdotal evidence to suggest that remaining in one's kitchen at 2:15 p.m. prevented one from being at a dentist office three miles away at 2:15 p.m.," Thorne said. "Now, we have the regression curves to prove it. This completely reframes how we look at the clock."
The publication has already drawn interest from municipal transit authorities and corporate human resource departments, many of whom are eager to apply the study's primary recommendation: encouraging individuals to begin moving toward their destination before the time they are expected to be there.
Despite the rigor of the methodology, some critics have questioned whether the €14 million budget might have been allocated to more pressing logistical inquiries. Brandt dismissed these concerns, arguing that intuitive assumptions are no substitute for peer-reviewed consensus.
"Without our equations, the average commuter would continue to blame external variables, such as a missing set of keys or a slow elevator," Brandt said. "Our model proves that those keys were missing during minutes that had already been lost. We are currently applying for an additional federal grant to study whether being asleep is a primary contributor to not being awake."
